Most mornings the problem is not that you have nothing to wear. It is that you have too many options and no clear way to choose between them. A simple formula does not solve every morning, but it gives you a starting point that works more often than not.

The anchor piece

Start with one piece that you know works. A pair of trousers you like, a knit you reach for without thinking, a jacket that fits well. This is the anchor. Everything else is built around it.

The anchor piece is usually a bottom or an outer layer, not a top. Tops are easier to swap and less likely to define the register of the whole outfit. Starting with a trouser or a coat gives you a clearer direction.

The supporting layer

The supporting layer is whatever goes with the anchor. If the anchor is a trouser, the supporting layer is a top or a knit. If the anchor is a coat, the supporting layer is whatever goes underneath it. The supporting layer should be in a color that works with the anchor without competing with it.

Neutral supporting layers. White, cream, grey, black. Work with almost any anchor. A colored supporting layer can work well but requires more thought about the relationship between the two colors.

The one detail

One detail is enough. A visible collar above a knit. A belt that defines the waist. A bag in a color that picks up something in the outfit. One detail makes an outfit look considered without making it look effortful.

Two details start to compete with each other. Three details are usually too many. The instinct to add more when an outfit feels flat is usually wrong. The problem is more often in the anchor or the supporting layer than in the details.

When the formula does not work

The formula breaks down when the anchor piece is not actually working. When it is a piece you keep trying to make work but that does not quite fit or does not combine well with anything else. In that case, the formula will keep producing outfits that feel slightly off, and the solution is to reconsider the anchor, not to add more details.

The formula is a starting point, not a rule. Once you have used it enough times, you will stop needing it. The logic becomes automatic.
