How to layer knits over shirt collars in autumn

Every autumn the same combination comes back: a knit worn over a collared shirt, with the collar sitting above the neckline. It looks simple in photographs and slightly awkward in real life, at least until you understand why it works and why it sometimes does not. The difference usually comes down to two things: the shape of the collar and the weight of the knit.

Founder, Established since 2021

Mia Tanaka

Mia Tanaka grew up in Osaka and moved to Tokyo in her mid-twenties for work in graphic design. She spent several years doing layout and visual direction for a small print magazine before the publication folded in 2020. The following year she started Yard Mesh Vault as a way of keeping a visual record of her own daily dressing. She has no formal fashion training, which she considers an advantage: the blog is written from the perspective of someone who figures things out by wearing them, not by studying them. She keeps a small wardrobe by habit, plays records on weekend mornings, and has a regular reader named Keiko who has been commenting since the very first post.

FAQ

Common questions

Q01

Do I need to own the exact pieces shown in each outfit post?

Not at all. Every post includes notes on what to swap if you do not have the specific item. The logic of the combination matters more than the exact garment. A similar-weight knit in a different color will usually work just as well.

Q02

Are the outfits suitable for different body types?

Mia writes about fit and proportion honestly, including what works on her own frame and where a different silhouette might need a different approach. The posts are not prescriptive. They are starting points. Most combinations can be adjusted by changing the trouser cut or the length of the top layer.
