Autumn color palettes in fashion content tend to look beautiful and be slightly impractical. The deep burgundy and the warm terracotta photograph well together but may not combine with anything you already own. This post is about the autumn colors that actually work in a real wardrobe. The ones that earn their place by combining well with what is already there.

The colors that do the most work

Dark olive is the most versatile autumn color in a wardrobe that already contains navy, black, grey, and white. It works as a trouser color, a knit color, and a coat color. It combines with warm neutrals and with cooler ones, which makes it unusually flexible.

Warm camel is the second most useful. It lifts a wardrobe of dark neutrals without introducing a color that requires careful management. A camel coat over a navy and white outfit is a combination that works almost without thinking.

Colors worth introducing carefully

Rust and terracotta are beautiful autumn colors but they require more thought. They combine well with dark navy, warm white, and dark olive, but they fight with cool grey and black. If your wardrobe is mostly cool neutrals, rust is a harder color to introduce than it looks in photographs.

Burgundy has the same problem. It is a classic autumn color but it is specific. It works with certain neutrals and not others. Worth introducing as an accent rather than as a main piece until you know how it sits with what you already own.

How to introduce a new color without disrupting what works

Start with a small piece in the new color. A knit, a scarf, a bag. Rather than a coat or a trouser. A small piece lets you test the color against what you already own without committing to it as a main element of the wardrobe.

If the small piece combines well with three or more things you already own, it is earning its space. If it only works with one or two things, it is a specialty item rather than a wardrobe addition.

Autumn color is worth thinking about slowly. The colors that look best in September are not always the ones that still feel right in November, and it is worth knowing which ones you are actually drawn to versus which ones just look good in shop windows.
